Beach Re-Nourishment Project

We have some very exciting news to share with you…Holden Beach has had a MAJOR re-nourishment project done to the beach strand within the past couple of years! We are in awe of how beautiful and extra wide the strand is now!  

As many of you know, erosion is a constant battle along the shoreline for a barrier island like Holden Beach. We struggle on a constant basis with the shifting sands that bless us with sand but in the next tide can remove those sands and take even more. Without the re-nourishment projects that are spearheaded by the owners with property tax and with our visiting vacationing guests through occupancy tax, there would be little or no strand for anyone to enjoy. During periods of high tide, in many areas along the strand, there would be little if any dry sand available for beach goers to enjoy. Now, without question, dry sand is not in short supply! Oh, and the icing on the cake is that the shelling has been awesome. With plentiful shells like scallops, olives, conch, whelks and more, visitors are sure to take home meaningful treasures of the sea as souvenirs. However, we ask that everyone stays mindful of being sure to fill up any holes they dig for the safety of folks walking the beach and for nesting and hatching sea turtles! 

The re-nourishment project area was from the East End of the island down to about 781 Ocean Blvd West. The entire island did not need this widening as the strand in the 800 block to the far West End of the island was in good shape, with plenty of dry sand at high tide.  For most of the homes at the western end of the island as well as the the areas that did receive the re-nourishment, be aware that it will require a longer walk to the water’s edge than it was before. So be mindful that sandals will likely be needed on warm days as the sand may be hot.  

You will not believe your eyes when you see just how nice and wide our beach looks now and hopefully for many, many years to come!
